The Monkees - Riu, Chiu

Back

The Monkees sing an acappella rendition of an Old Spanish Christmas Carol, "Ríu, Chíu". Followed by a Christmas Message from the cast and crew.

English Translation:

River, roaring river, guard our homes in safety,
God has kept the black wolf from our lamb, our lady.
God has kept the black wolf from our lamb, our lady.

Raging mad to bite her, there the wolf did steal,
But our God almighty defended her with zeal.
Pure he wished to keep her so she could never sin,
That first sin of man never touched the virgin sainted.

River, roaring river...

He who's now begotten is our mighty monarch,
Christ, our holy father, in human flesh embodied.
He has brought atonement by being born so humble,
Though he is immortal, as mortal was created.

River, roaring river...

Discovered The Monkees like everyone else my age did: MTV. I think the second season was better when they got rid of the laugh track.

I've been wondering for years where to find this song and the translation. Thanks, monkeemen!

i never saw this special back in the day.
had i seen it, my respect for the monkees would have doubled. Riu Chiu is one of my favorite songs and they do a great job!! Today I work in art dept of films, and the fact that they thanked EVERYONE and got them up on front of camera... that's way cooler than you can imagine - I love the fact that Davy introduces them all and knows (mostly) who they are and what they do - that's very rare these days!!! awesome!!! great post!!!!

This was the best harmonizing the Monkees ever did, I think. For sure, it's MY favorite Monkees song. Happy Holidays-2008!!!!!! :-)

Refrain: Riu, riu, chiu (nightingale's sounds)
The river bank protects it,
As God kept the wolf
from our lamb.

The rabid wolf tried to bite her,
But God Almighty knew how to defend her,
He wished to create her impervious to sin,
Nor was this maid to embody original sin.
Refrain
The newborn child is the mightiest monarch,
Christ patriarchal invested with flesh.
He made himself small and so redeemed us:
He who was infinite became finite.
juliejazz (October 29, 2008 at 7:45 pm)
Many prophecies told of his coming,
And now in our days have we seen them fulfilled.
God became man, on earth we behold him,
And see man in heaven because he so willed.
Refrain
A thousand singing herons I saw passing,
Flying overhead, sounding a thousand voices,
Exhulting, "Glory be in the heavens,
and peace on Earth, for Jesus has been born."
He comes to give life to the dead,
He comes to redeem the fall of man;
juliejazz (October 29, 2008 at 7:46 pm)
This child is the light of day,
He is the very lamb Saint John prophecied.
Refrain

Now we have gotten what we were all desiring,
Go we together to bear him gifts:
Let each give his will to the God who was willing
To come down to Earth man's equal to be.
