Rose's Turn-Gypsy-Ethel Merman

I've listened to the other divas on YouTube singing "Rose's Turn," from "Gypsy." I keep hearing about Ethel Merman's original Broadway Version, but couldn't find it on YouTube so I'm posting the audio. (I've created a repeating video montage of some of Merman's photos, for visual interest). How do you think she compares to the divas that followed her? : Angela Lansbury, Rosalind Russell, Bette Midler, Tyne Daly, Patti Lupone, Liza Minelli, Bernadette Peters,Betty Buckley, etc? Who gives your favorite vocal delivery? Who's acting of the song moves you the most? Enjoy!

PS: I'm just discovering Merman, so any favorite books on her you'd like to recommend, let me know, thanks.

she actually had several marriages and two children, its just that ernest in particular was ill-fated...it was what, a 10 day marriage? lol it ended before the honeymoon even began. i guess that's what he got for thinking he was gonna be able to tell merm what to do.

Read the AUTOBIOGRAPHY like the film producers did to see how Mama WAS "feminine" & why they got ROSALIND instead. ooooooooooh

Ethel should have stuck with stand up comedy because her voice shatters glass & speakers. Her vibrato sounds like a warped record player from the 30s. Russel is the best. How do you like THEM eggrolls, Ying Yang?

Bush: U put words in my mouth (just like Ethel): I never said the film dictated anything; u just did! I didn't say that the stage show didn't either; U just did! But the stage version isn't the AUTOBIOGRAPHY: it might HELP ur career to READ it & RESEARCH ur characters...then maybe it would be your wallet instead of it's owner getting fat on u-tube.

huh? I don't care. Aren't u the pot calling the kettle black. U just contradicted yourself by repyling to a comment that wasn't directed to you and letting me have MY opinion (?) She sucks because she sucks as a performer & that's why she HAS to upstage; that's why she didn't get the film role (lol). I know that Mama was supposed to be feminine becuase I READ THE BOOK. You should try is sometime. Btw, Roz is more fem than Murman (the LESBIAN). Do we NEED a book for her?
