David Letterman visits the GE Building (1986)

Back

When General Electric acquired NBC from longtime parent company RCA in 1986, David Letterman with a fruit basket and a camera crew tries to enter in the General Electric Building hoping to welcome the new owners with open arms. But as you'll see in this classic clip, things really didn't get off on the right foot!

By the way...the General Electric Building (built 1931) is not to be confused with the much taller GE Building (built 1933, they were the RCA Building prior to the sale), which was and still is NBC's headquarters.

A related tidbit forever lost to history - I videotaped this episode in 1986 and at the very end of the show after the closing credits rolled they had the GE logo superimposed over a slo-mo of the "corporate handshake" with some GE corporate jingle tossed in. Never saw this bit in reruns.
