why is it a duty to vote? I prefer if smart people vote instead of nuts. someone said that he wouldnt vote for obama cause of his middle name.

people kept telling each other on who to vote. half says "vote for bush", the other half "vote for kerry" or al gore. cant remember. then voting always turns out a failure, they nag in every country. its ridiculous. concensus democracy is the answer. many tribes live like this. its great. except when someone like mugabe is messing with them.

There are countries where not voting is punished with a trivial money fine - the penalty is only there as a reminder of how important it is, not to actually strike and punish non-voters.

i thought we also had freedom for political and religious persecution...so doesn't that mean if i choose NOT to vote, NOT to participate in the democracy, NOT to exercise my right, that i can't be deemed a moron b/c that is persecuting me based on how i want to behave politically, regardless of whether Craig Ferguson agrees with me or not. That said, I really like Craig, and before ppl start screaming, yes, i voted, these are just ideas that make platitudes appear like the crap that they are.

you're correct, it is your right not to vote if you want. it is also Craig's right to call you a moron, even if there is no good reason for it.

but what happens when it goes past that? to linking actual citizen rights to voting? what if, under the idea of "no vote, you're a moron", it came down to that if i didn't vote and protested the government, the government could say that i had not participated and done my "duty", therefore my acts were seditious and then throw me in jail. yes, craig has the right, but it's also a slippery slope if ppl decide to do more than just talk.

yes they can. they're americans, they can complain about anything they want. to try to tie their right to complain to voting is a total destruction and desecration of the first amendment. and we have the electoral college, who don't have to vote the way the states they represented voted, so really the electoral college elects the president, not your votes. shove your unthought out platitudes back up your ass.
