Cortez did not defeat the the city states of Mexico. It was the Small Pox they brought. King Phillip did not know he used germ warfare to get super rich. Plus there was internal termoil.

Well, that's the problem, monsieur. Did Cortes, or any of the Spanish share any of the New World with natives? The Olmec were not "barbaric", neither were the Mixtec, yet they're gone. If they truly cared, they wouldn't have swept them away afterwards. They saw no difference between Olmec and Aztec, as an Extraterrestrial would see absolutely no difference between Americans and French. Cortes was sent to get rich, and colonize. That's what he did, and he did a fine job.

If extraterrestrians decided to emancipate radically women in Afghanistan even by killing the religious supporters of such domination, I would say bravo.....

That's ridiculous as Cortez didn't commit massacres by pleasure. He only reacted to barbarian behaviors. After conquest of Mexico violence stopped and Cortez tried to organize his conquest. ... If extraterrestrians killed Al Qaida zelots or pleople throwing acids to women in Afghanistan , I would say bravo !! If extraterrestrians exterminated Janjawids in Darfur I would say bravo !!

he never smashes his guitars..just uses strings that are old and near to breaking, then breaks em.... and messes w/the broken strings, creating new sounds..That black Les Paul is the same guitar he has used from 68 or 69 on..

Morality is relative to context. Cortes and the conquistadors had indigenous allies that helped them overthrow the Aztec empire. All sides were correct by their own standards, as in -any war-. Your point is hardly relevant.
longhairhiggins (January 1, 2009 at 9:51 am)
Well, correct by their standards. That makes all the boo-boos go away. The bloody Aztec empire, and then the Spanish Empire with slave labor and all the other goodies. Cortes was not a hero. He was a change in regime for the Aztec people. The Spanish were not at all interested in saving the native people, they thought of them as barbarians and animals. Did Cortes really aid the native people, in the long run?

My point is made, and has nothing to do with goals or long term changes for the better or worse. Assigning present day morality to something that happened 600 years ago is a tenuous stance at best, the same as assigning your own morality to an 'alien civilization' to use your example. I will reiterate: Morality is relative to time, place, and culture. That is the only thing I am arguing.
