I've always wondered if this film is popular in France. The protaganists run off to join the Free French, but the film also shows the seemier side of Vichy France.

To be precise it had it's New York City premiere on November 26, 1942. It's release to theaters through out the rest of the nation was on January 23, 1943. I was merely going by the full release.

I can't believe that dopey bitch was paired opposite Humphrey Bogart. This movie would have rode the fail train off a cliff if he wasn't cast.

I'll also extend my thanks to the mystic's dream for posting it. Though having been parodied and replayed thousands of times, this ending remains the stuff of the American (and French) soul. It's like an anthem.

Makes you kinda respect that generation. Love of country, allied against evil, the value of personal sacrifice. I wonder if this kind of message would mean anything in a new movie.
