Soldier Forgoes Iraq For NFL, Lions Draft Caleb Campbell

Back

- In the 7th Round of the 2008 NFL Draft a huge cheer erupted from the small-compared-to-Day-One crowd and it was for a little-known cadet who also played football for Army. Caleb Campbell, who was drafted by the Detroit Lions in that last round. As that happened I talked to Dr. Bill Chackhes who gave me the details on Campbell's story. Caleb basically deferred going to Iraq as a officer after he is to graduate with the current Army class of 2008. The Army is allowing him to play in the NFL.

Everyone was enthusiastic to meet the man Bill called "The All American Boy" and this video captures that moment.

this shouldn't be too much of a shock to Caleb. Kyle Eckel graduated from Navy in 2005 played for New England in the preseason but didn't make the last cut to the 55 man team. he was able to do this while "working" at the Naval Academy Prep School in Newport. he went to Norfolk until May 2007 where he was released by the Navy to train with the Dolphins for the summer before coming back to New England.

It's because those pricks from Navy and Air Force whined about it. "Oh it's not right to let someone under contract play professional sports." Granted, he signed his committment to the military. However, during his initial committment at the academy, he also signed a statement saying that if he were drafted, he could play and serve as a PR. Seems the Army screwed him over on this deal. And fuck Navy. Stupid pricks....

I've been in the Army for 18 years now, and just to set record straight.. there is no "once in a lifetime clause". There are circumstance which are considered for processing a Chapter leading to Discharge, but contrary to popular myth, once you sign the dotted line you belong to Uncle Sam.

garand, your right he did sign a contract that has a clause that states when one goes professional in a field they will be released. So, they failed to uphold their end of the agreement. Oh also, I was there for initial invasion and all we found were some scud missiles. So, stop coming of like a brain washed conservative. Cpl. J G Wentworth USMC
P.S. Republicans destroy the American economy, do some research.

Thanks for being brave & forthright as a service member to speak the truth: Rethuglicans destroy the U.S. economy. If anyone needs that explained to them after these past 7 years, they are, indeed, brainwashed.

Hopefully this is not the end of Campbell'ss career. I look forward for the big thngs he will do in his future with the league because as Millen said he will get his chance some where down the line. I am glad we have people like Campbell without our soldiers we would not even have the right to watch football let alone live the great world we live today. I am disappointed though that he found out from Millen when he went to sign his contract and not form the military themself.
